Leveling 101

You’ve finished the OOC tutorial, popped out at the Academy, and gotten your medallion.  The next thing to do is to figure out how to level.  CoM has a unique leveling system that is based on skill percents rather than experience.  This guide will walk you through how to level your character. As a note, we are constantly updating the game, so some parts of this tutorial will become out of date visually.  However, the leveling mechanics remain the same.

Don’t worry too much about whether you can murder trainees in the Academy based on your alignment; the goal here is to learn to play the game, and the trainees will get better.  Out in the real world, you will have to play your class and alignment more closely.

The first thing to do is to find somewhere that you can practice.  There are many NPC guildmasters around the world, usually in a guild room of some sort.  You can find this one by heading east from the fountain in the Academy:

The Casting Classrooms
This room is large and comforting. There is a crackling fireplace in a back
corner, next to an open entrance leading further east. Thick carpets lie on
the ground, and magical lamps line the walls. The atmosphere is relaxing and
friendly. A latent magical energy lies within the place, as things fade in
and out, colours change, and smells shift. Large archways lead off to the
north and south, while a corridor continues off to the east.

[Exits: north east south west]
A thin, aging enchanter smiles charmingly here. (PRACTICE <SKILL>)

<20hp 100mn 100mv>

Not all guildmasters will be labeled for you out in the world, nor are they knowledgeable in everything like this one is.  Some guildmasters around the world will only teach certain skills.  You can use SGROUP <SKILL> to find out the proper guild later on, or you can return to the Academy.

To start out, have a look at your skills. You can do this by typing PRACTICE.

You need 1 75-79% skill to level.

You have 3 practice sessions left.

<20hp 100mn 100mv>

Find the red -1.  The one in this picture is next to the “75-79% skills” tier.  This means that you will need to improve one skill up to that tier to reach your next level, as it says at the bottom.  Potential skills you can improve to satisfy this requirement are claw, dagger, magic missile, wear leather, and whip.  You will level if any of these skills reach 75-79%.  Most skills improve through use, but if you are ever confused on how to improve a skill, you can look it up with HELP <SKILL> before you practice it.

It is best to focus first on weapon skills, fatalities (decapitate, gash, etc), and dodges (dodge, evasion, shield block).  Spells are slower to level and they will not be covered in this guide, but improve through use just like any other skill.

You have 3 practice sessions.  Let’s go ahead and practice sword and wear leather.  The most you can practice a skill is up to 74%.

Many skills will improve from 1%, but since they need to be at least 75% before they count towards your leveling, we will practice them to 74% for the purpose of this guide.  In the future, you can focus more on conserving practices.

<20hp 100mn 100mv>

Now, how do we go about getting that last 1% to claw, sword, or wear leather?  This is where you consult the help files. You will find that wear leather improves automatically as long as you are wearing leather, so we can wait for that.  Claw is a felis racial skill that improves in combat.  Sword is a weapons skill that requires you to fight with a sword equipped.  While you’re deciding your next step, you might see something like this happen:

You have become better at wear leather (75)!
You reach level 2!!
You gain 15 hit points, 12 mana, 6 move, and 4 practices.

<24hp 112mn 106mv>

This means you’ve gained a level through the sheer luck of wear leather improving.  You can type PRACTICE now to see what new skills you have gained:

Let’s go about trying to get our next level with claw, evasion, or sword.  Remember, claw is automatic as long as we’re fighting.  Evasion was already set back when we practiced it.  Sword needs us to fight with a sword, so let’s first check that we have our sword equipped with the EQUIPMENT command.

eq
You are using:
<as light>         a dented brass lantern
<on face>          a pair of wire-frame glasses
<held>             a small, leather-bound keepsake book
<wielded>          a gilded steel sword
<on torso>         a crisp green tunic trimmed in silver
<as backpack>      a small leather pack adorned with feathers
<on legs>          a set of rough leather leggings
<on feet>          a pair of hard leather boots

<35hp 112mn 106mv>

You have a sword equipped, so head west to the Training Yard and find an opponent.

The Entrance to the Training Yard
As the hallway goes on, light filters through the large, gray and white marble
hallway from the gate ahead.  The sounds of battle can be heard just through
it, and a few sands filter into the otherwise spotlessly clean floor.  The
statues continue up until the end of the hallway, and a pair of gigantic
marble statues lie at the sides of the gate, swords held high above it.  The
gate itself is perpetually open, allowing trainees freedom to move in and out
at will.  To the south, the hallway returns back to the other sections.

You learn from your mistakes, and your evasion skill improves (76).
You reach level 3!!
You gain 15 hit points, 13 mana, 7 move, and 4 practices.
A human trainee's puny slash lacerates you!
A human trainee's slash misses you.
You lash forward and claw a human trainee with a massive swipe.
Your puny claw injures a human trainee!
You have become better at claw (75)!
You reach level 4!!
You gain 15 hit points, 13 mana, 8 move, and 4 practices.
Your pierce misses a human trainee.
A human trainee has some big nasty wounds and scratches.

<30hp 112mn 98mv>

This character was lucky enough to get two skill-ups in one round of combat.  After this, the process is the same.  Check for new skills obtained using PRACTICE, MAGIC, or SKILL.  Practice those skills.  See what you need for your next level, and use skills until they improve.

An important note is that leveling is easier with higher attributes.  You can see your current attributes if you type SCORE and look for where your STR, INT, WIS, DEX, and CON are displayed:

One way to increase your attributes is to use trains.  You gain one train every 5 levels, or you can exchange 10 practices for one train.  Trains can be used at any trainer in the world.

Another way to increase your attributes is to wear equipment.  During your first fights, you may find new clothes that are better for you.  You can loot corpses with the GET <OBJECT> <CORPSE> command and try on clothes using WEAR. Remember the human trainee we stunned?  We can fatality him and try on his things.

<68hp 138mn 130mv>

Trying on new equipment is very important in the game.  For your first few levels, practice trying on equipment and checking SCORE to see what effects the new clothes have on your character.  You should focus on increasing your attributes while you are leveling since higher attributes will increase the rate at which you level as well as the amount of HP, mana, and movement you gain from leveling up.

You should discard items that you do not use rather than leave them in your inventory.  Put items you want to keep in a bag to reduce how much they weigh and keep them safe.  The extra weight as they clutter your inventory will cause you to use more movement when walking.

That concludes this leveling guide.  Search the help files for how to use certain skills and then pick the ones that are easiest to improve.  You are welcome to ask on the NEW channel if you need advice on what to practice or how to reach your next level.
